Sen. Muhammad Hassan (PDP) Yobe South
Sen. Muhammad Hassan (PDP) Yobe South, on Sunday donated N2 million and relief materials worth millions of Naira to flood victims in Ngelzarma.

Hassan, who presented the materials to the Emir of Ngelzarma, Alhaji Zanna Maiyeri, said the donation was to provide the victims with their immediate needs.

The relief materials were assorted foodstuff including rice, millet, guinea corn, beans, spaggetti, salt, sugar, milk, cooking oil, blankets, mattresses, mats, wrappers and clothing materials.

“I feel obliged to intervene and provide the flood victims who are members of my constituency with succour as they have been displaced and now taking refuge outside their homes.

“I have also drawn the attention of the relevant authorities, organisations and well meaning Nigerians to appreciate the plight of the flood victims in Ngelzarma and other communities so as to provide them with assistance,” he said.

The lawmaker described the menace of erosion in the area as alarming, which he said, had made the communities prone to flood and other environmental problems.

“If you look round the affected communities, there are no drainages and that is why this problem keeps reoccurring; unless the relevant authorities do the right thing.

“It is not just Ngelzarma but many towns in Yobe have poor town planning and without drainage system; if you go to Potiskum during rainy season, there are a lot of places you cannot drive, so the state government has to do something about it,” he said.

He assured that cases of erosion and flood suffered by communities in the constituency would be submitted to the Senate Committee on Erosion and Other Environmental Matters for urgent attention.

The Emir of Ngelzarma, Alhaji Maiyeri, commended the legislator for the quick intervention, saying, “this will go a long way in providing succour to the victims who have lost everything to the flood”.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 75 per cent of Ngelzarma town, including houses, farmlands and livestock, were swept away by floods, but no life was lost. (NAN)
